The City of Cincinnati has two VISTA positions opening soon – one in the Department of City Planning and the other in the Department of Community and Economic Development – that graduate students with a flexible schedule or recent graduates may find interesting. City Planning – Affordable Housing Specialist Since last July the Department of City Planning has hosted its first of three, year-long AmeriCorps VISTAs. AmeriCorps VISTAs work directly to improve local communities across the country and expand the operational capacity of their host organizations. VISTAs also develop professional skills and networks while receiving a monthly stipend and benefits. City Planning’s first-year VISTA, a Xavier University master’s student, has developed a data collection methodology and conducted a housing inventory for Over-the-Rhine. Starting this July, the second-year VISTA will continue this position and refine the inventory methodology for the Walnut Hills neighborhood. The VISTA positions require significant community relations and public speaking skills, as well as data collection and analysis, time management, and organization skills. Community and Economic Development’s first-year VISTA has initiated research and public engagement for a Workforce Action Plan. The purpose of the plan is to assess current conditions for target populations that experience barriers to gainful employment, inventory the many stakeholder organizations and the services they currently offer, and compile recommendations for how to better serve these target populations in the future. The VISTA position requires research, communication, and report writing skills. Any interest and experience in public policy development is a plus.
